Compass Minerals responsibly harvests magnesium chloride (MgCl2) from the Great Salt Lake in Utah using solar evaporation. We’re the largest U.S. producer of this naturally occurring mineral.

Magnesium chloride has many uses, including as an additive and a stand-alone ice melter. Because it is less corrosive than conventional deicing products, it is gentler on sidewalks, driveways and parking lots. Its pet-safe characteristics make it ideal for home ice-melting use.

We enhance several of our ice melt blends with magnesium chloride.

Salt (sodium chloride) occurs naturally all over the Earth, and it has even been found in meteors and on Mars.

The Earth’s ocean water is 2.7 percent salt, and huge underground deposits of solid salt are located in many locations around the world. There is so much salt found underground and in saline waters that the supply is almost inexhaustible. In fact, geologists estimate that salt from the United States alone could provide all the salt the world needs for the next 100,000 years.

Salt is a proven and economical tool in combating snow and ice on sidewalks, driveways and parking lots.

Through the responsible transformation of the earth’s natural resources, we help keep people safer while being committed to our stewardship of the environment.

We are proud to offer several deicing products that are formulated for a lower environmental impact, compared with traditional ice melters when used as directed.
